How Instagram ranks posts

There isn’t one Instagram algorithm. Feed, Stories, Reels and Explore each use their own ranking, but they lean on similar signals. Here’s what matters, in plain English.

Feed: people you already follow

Your main feed mostly shows accounts you follow, plus suggested posts. Ranking leans on how often you interact with an account, how much you tend to engage with that type of post, and how recently it was posted. For a business, that means your existing followers see you more if they’ve liked, commented on, or messaged you recently.

Reels: built for discovery

Reels are shown widely to people who don’t follow you. Instagram has said that watch time, likes, shares and how often people send a Reel to friends are strong signals. The first seconds matter: if people swipe away, the Reel stops being shown. Original content tends to do better than reposted clips.

Explore: interest-based

Explore surfaces posts similar to what someone has engaged with before. Early engagement from people interested in that topic helps a post spread there.

Shares and saves

A like is a light signal. A share to a friend or a save for later suggests the post was genuinely useful or entertaining, and Instagram has publicly highlighted sends as an important signal for reaching new people.

What doesn’t drive reach

Follower count by itself doesn’t push posts further, and neither does a pile of hashtags. Bought likes don’t create the watch time, shares or comments the ranking looks for. That’s why we say a package changes how a profile looks, not how far posts travel.

What this means for NZ accounts

  • Post when New Zealanders are online. An overseas posting schedule can land at 3am here. See best time to post in NZ.
  • Make Reels worth sending. A local tip, a behind-the-scenes moment, a “you have to try this” recommendation.
  • Reply to comments quickly. Conversations signal interest.
  • Use location tags. They help locals find you through places.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do hashtags still matter?
A few relevant ones help describe the post. They aren’t a major reach lever any more.
Does buying likes help the algorithm?
Not meaningfully. Ranking leans on watch time, shares and saves from people who actually see the post.
Should I post Reels or photos?
Reels reach more non-followers; photos and carousels often do well with existing followers. Mix both.

Numbers look thin?

A small package can tidy the profile while you build reach.
