Is buying followers safe? The honest risks

Short answer: it isn’t risk-free, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. Here’s what the platforms say, what usually happens in practice, and how to keep the downside small.

What the rules say

Both Instagram and TikTok prohibit inauthentic activity in their terms, and buying followers or likes falls under that. Neither platform makes an exception for small orders or good intentions. So the question isn’t whether it’s allowed (it isn’t) but what tends to happen and how much it matters to you.

What usually happens

  • Some followers disappear. Platforms regularly remove accounts they decide are fake or inactive. A portion of a delivery can vanish weeks later. This is the most common outcome, and it’s why we top up free for 30 days.
  • Likes get trimmed. Likes from removed accounts can drop off older posts too.
  • Nothing visible. For many small, steady orders on accounts that post normally, nothing obvious happens at all.

What happens less often

Account-level penalties, such as features being limited or reach dropping, are uncommon and are most often tied to things we don’t do: handing a password to a third-party service, using follow/unfollow bots, or running automation apps that log in as you. We only ever need a public username or link, which keeps your login out of anyone else’s hands.

Reputational risk

The bigger risk for a business is credibility. A brand manager who sees 12,000 followers and nine likes a post will assume the account is inflated. Keep packages in proportion to your real activity, and check your ratios with the engagement calculator. Our guide on spotting fake followers shows what others look for.

Advertising and disclosure

If you’re paid to promote products, New Zealand’s advertising standards expect sponsored posts to be clearly identified as ads. A bigger follower count doesn’t change that obligation, and misrepresenting your reach to a client could be a problem in its own right. Be straight with anyone paying you about what your numbers include.

Keeping the downside small

  1. Never give anyone your password or login code.
  2. Start small and go in steps, rather than one huge jump.
  3. Keep posting while a delivery runs.
  4. Keep likes and followers in a believable ratio.
  5. Don’t buy for an account you can’t afford to have limited.
FAQ

Questions people ask

Will I get banned for buying followers?
Bans are rare and usually linked to sharing logins or using bots. We can’t rule it out, which is why we never call this risk-free.
Can Instagram tell I bought followers?
Platforms look for patterns of inauthentic accounts. They don’t publish how. Paced delivery avoids the most obvious spike.
What if my followers drop?
If it’s within 30 days of delivery, email your order number and we’ll top it up free.
