Best time to post in New Zealand

Most “best time to post” advice is written for the US or the UK, which is the middle of the night here. Here’s how to think about timing for a New Zealand audience.

New Zealand time, twice a year

New Zealand Standard Time (NZST) is UTC+12. From the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April, daylight saving moves the clock to NZDT, UTC+13. If you schedule posts with a tool set to another time zone, check it after each change, or your posts will quietly shift by an hour.

Why overseas advice misses

A guide that says “post at 9am” usually means 9am in New York or London. That’s the early hours of the morning in New Zealand. Even Australian advice is at least two hours off, and more for Western Australia, depending on daylight saving on either side of the Tasman.

Starting points to test

  • Early morning, 6:30 to 8:30. People check phones before work and on the commute.
  • Lunchtime, 12:00 to 1:30. A short scroll at the desk or in the café queue.
  • Evening, 7:00 to 9:30. Often the strongest window for both Instagram and TikTok, once dinner’s done.
  • Weekends. Later starts; mid-morning Saturday and Sunday evening are worth testing.

Treat these as experiments, not rules. A café’s audience is different from a gamer’s.

Read your own data

On a professional Instagram account, Insights shows when your followers are most active, by day and hour. TikTok’s analytics on a business or creator account show follower activity too. After a month, compare reach for posts at different times and move towards what works.

If your audience isn’t only in NZ

If you sell to Australians, a New Zealand evening post also lands in the Australian evening. For US or UK audiences you’ll need separate posts or scheduling at odd hours here. Decide who matters most and post for them.

Timing isn’t everything

A great post at an average time beats an average post at the perfect time. Instagram and TikTok both keep showing content that holds attention well after it’s posted. See how Instagram ranks posts and how For You works.
